Pakistan: Afghan government, Taliban representatives meeting in a week

Pakistan says that a meeting has been scheduled between representatives of the Afghan government and Taliban in a week.

Sartaj Aziz, adviser on Foreign Affairs and National Security to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Mohammad Nawaz Sharif did not disclose the location of this meeting but it could be more likely in China, Norway, UAE and Qatar since most of the previous meetings have taken place in these countries.

Sartaj Aziz while acknowledging that Pakistan had organized a meeting between Mohammad Masoum Stanikzai the then secretary of Afghanistan’s High Peace Council and representatives of Taliban group in the Chinese city of Urumqi last month said that a major breakthrough in Afghan peace process is likely in three months.

The news comes amid a sharp raise in Taliban attacks in the country. They have been fighting in a number of remote districts and targeted the Afghan Parliament yesterday.

On Tuesday’s session of the parliament, MPs held responsibility Pakistan’s spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for the attack.

They asked Afghan government to choose a definite stance towards Pakistan.
