Republicans set for biggest primary field in US history

As 15 candidates hustle for media exposure, donations and party support in the most crowded presidential primary in the history of the United States, the Republicans so-called “invisible primary” looks set to be particularly animated.

The Iowa caucuses, the first ballot to help pick the presidential nominees for the Democratic andRepublican parties, are still more than six months away. A frantic competition between candidates is nevertheless well under way in what is often referred to as the “invisible primaries”, an intense period in which they must build name recognition, fundraise, woo voters and secure endorsements.

Tumultuous “invisible primaries” have been the norm for several presidential cycles in the United States, but the very crowded 2016 Republican contest looks set to be particularly lively – and probably bruising.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker joined 14 other GOP candidates when he jumped into the primary pool on July 7. Two other men – Ohio Governor John Kasich and Former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore – are also expected to take the plunge, making it the most crowded presidential primary in the history of the United States.
